About the RMIT University Research Scholarships

RMIT University offers two major scholarship types:

  • RTP Stipend Scholarship (RSS) – funded by the Australian Government
  • RMIT Research Stipend Scholarship (RRSS) – funded by RMIT itself

Once you apply, you’ll be automatically considered for all available research scholarships you qualify for. That means one application gives you multiple chances.

When to Apply?
Applications for 2026 are now open.

RMIT’s scholarship selection is highly competitive, so the earlier you apply, the better.

Important:

You must have a research supervisor from RMIT willing to supervise you before you submit your Expression of Interest (EOI). Start contacting potential supervisors now.

Scholarship Value

Though 2026 values of RMIT university research scholarships may increase, here’s what you could enjoy under the RSS or RRSS. These quoted figures are what we obtained from the 2025 grants.

  • $35,886 AUD per year
  • Full Tuition Fee Waiver
  • Relocation Support
  • Paid Sick Leave, Maternity, and Parenting Leave
  • Scholarship Duration:
    • PhD: 3.5 years full-time
    • Masters by Research: 2 years full-time

Eligibility Criteria for the RMIT University Research Scholarships

This opportunity is open to:

  • Domestic and international applicants
  • Students with excellent academic records
  • Those who haven’t already completed a research degree at the same level
  • Candidates based at RMIT’s Australian campuses

You’ll have an edge if:

  • You scored 80% and above in your last degree
  • You’ve published research or have relevant experience
  • You’re available to study full-time

Note: International students must meet RMIT’s English requirements by the deadline.

Who Is Not Eligible?

You may not qualify if:

  • You already hold a PhD or Research Master’s
  • You’re currently receiving a similar scholarship valued above 75% of this one
  • You’ve previously held an RMIT or Commonwealth-funded scholarship unless it ended within 6 months

  1. Find a Supervisor at RMIT who agrees to work with you
  2. Prepare your Expression of Interest (EOI)
  3. Gather all supporting documents
  4. Apply via the official portal
